RMA'd my mobo and since installing the replacement, windows won't shut down. It just sits there with the spinning wheel of boredom saying it's shutting down. This is usually a windows problem so I did a fresh install, same thing. Booted with HDD that I use for storage, same thing. Safe mode and clean boot it will shut down so as unlikely as it seems, windows is the problem. Short of going through process by process does anyone have a suggestion?

Possibly a service not stopping that is preventing shutdown. Usually get a notification when that happens. Not sure. Could try 15 secs in the Microwave.  Twisted Evil

Tried the microwave fix. It put on a pretty good show. Not shuting down is no longer a problem.
I just think it's odd that a process is causing the same thing on the SSDs, old and new install and the HDD. Now service pack 1 won't install. I ran the fix but it still says nope.

So now it is or is not shutting down?

Did you try SP1 through the Windows Update or did you download the file and run it separately, or have you tried both?

What error message does SP1 give you?

Back to basics.  Get the PC down to barebones, 1 stick of ram, no peripherals, no extra cards, etc. to rule out some device driver issue.

If the PC is still not shutting down, look at your startup services (msconfig from command line) and start turning one off at a time until the PC is able to shutdown.  Process of elimination to find the software service that is running and causing the hang.  Make sure the graphics drivers being used by the OS are recent and from nvidia.

If that doesn't yield positive results, then the only other thing I can think of is to disable suspend/sleep/hibernate mode in the bios.

Stripped it down and it shuts down but updates still won't install. All drivers are from product manufacturers.

Added parts one at a time to see where the hangup was. A stick in DIMM slot 6 will cause it to not shut down. Still battling the update gremlins.

Updated ok but started having memory issues. Mem test found no problems but Origin wouldn't start and windows wouldn't shut down with 10 gb ram so pulled another stick. Worked 'till the next restart then Origin wouldn't start windows won't shut down with 8gb ram so pulled another stick. Runs fine on 6gb but what the hell? I really don't need more than 6gb ddr3 1600 but this is just silly.

Do you have the most current BIOS?

yep. It shipped with the newest one but nothing worked. It was musical sata ports for awhile. It wouldn't detect drives then it would then it wouldn't again. I reinstalled everything and now it's all good except the memory issue. I hope it's not the memory controller on the cpu. It's an i7 960.

If your board is the EVGA x58 SLI FTW3, Check the board readout for error codes. FF should show after it finishes post. Also, maybe some LED lights on board, problem with certain part if out or flashing.

Post Port Debug LED and LED Status Indicators

Post Port Debug LED:

Provides two-digit POST codes to show why the system may be failing to boot.(back of mb manual)
It is useful during troubleshooting situations. This Debug LED will also display
current CPU temperatures after the system has fully booted into the Operating System.

LED Status Indicators:

Theses LEDs indicate the system’s status.
POWER LED (Green ): When the System is powered on: This LED is on.
DIMM LED (Yellow): When the Memory slot is functional: This LED is on.
STANDBY LED (Blue): When the System is in Standby Mode: This LED is on. This LED will
remain on as long as the motherboard is receiving constant power.

Look into the voltage requirements for your memory and make sure it is properly set to that voltage in your bios.  Also, some bios tend to get the memory timings incorrect and you may need to manually set the timings for your memory.

Also, you might consider searching for information on your current bios.  Maybe you'll find some information about people needing to revert to a prior bios for similar hardware configuration as you have.

Last thing, isn't there a requirement that memory be installed in groups of 3 sticks for your platform?

That is my board Coop, are you some sort of wizard?I ran through the post code process while fighting all the ide detection failures and numerous other quirks. There are no post code faults now. I have to reset the timing every time I reset the bios but I didn't check the voltages duh.

Voltage is ok. It was 1.7, should have been 1.5 but still  ok. Yellow DIMM led is on.  I'm done with this I think. I'm not going to RMA and go through this again for RAM I don't even need. I'll save the RAM for when I eventually do upgrade to a board that supports trim control for my SSD raid, Thanks for the help fellas.
